What is WebP?
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. WebP was designed specifically for the web, with the goal of making images smaller and faster to load.

On average, WebP files are 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPG files at the same quality level. That's a huge difference! For a website with lots of images, switching from JPG to WebP can cut image bandwidth by a third, which directly translates to faster page loads.
When to Use WebP
WebP is a great choice for almost all web use cases:
- Photographs and complex images (replacing JPG)

As of 2026, WebP enjoys nearly universal support across all modern browsers. For the tiny percentage of users on very old browsers, you should serve a fallback to JPG or PNG.
