PNG is the go-to format for logos, icons, screenshots, and any image needing a transparent background, but PNG files are often much larger than they need to be. AVIF offers a modern alternative that maintains transparency while drastically reducing file sizes!
Why PNG is Great (But Not Perfect)
PNG uses lossless compression, meaning every pixel is preserved exactly. This makes it perfect for images with text, sharp edges, or transparency, but it also means file sizes can get very large, especially for high-resolution graphics.
AVIF: Lossless or Lossy, Your Choice!
AVIF supports both lossless and lossy compression modes, giving you flexibility:
- Lossless AVIF: Perfectly preserves quality, just like PNG, but usually 20-30% smaller.
- Lossy AVIF: Even more space savings, with quality imperceptible to the human eye at moderate settings.
AVIF for Transparent Images

When to Stick with PNG
